Chris Ricketts has over a decade of experience in music education and six years in curriculum and departmental leadership. Chris currently serves as Trust Music Coordinator for Bohunt Education Trust, alongside their role as a secondary school Curriculum Leader, where they champion student agency, curriculum innovation, and inclusive musical participation.
As an EdD candidate at the University of Portsmouth due to finish in 2026, his doctoral research examines curriculum policy, teacher agency and student perceptions through practitioner inquiry and critical pedagogy. His work spans policy discourse analysis, reflective practitioner vignettes, and applied classroom research, all aimed at strengthening equitable and relevant music learning for young people.
Chris has published widely in academic and practitioner outputs including the Journal of Popular Music Education, ACT - MayDay Group, The Music Educators Journal and Music Teacher Magazine. His work spans critical policy analysis, practitioner inquiry, curriculum design, and student/teacher agency, offering research-informed insights that intend to bridge the gap between classroom practice, wider educational discourse, and emerging debates in music education.
A former professional vocalist and guitarist, Chris still continues to perform and tour internationally. Each summer, he tours across Canada performing original material, shanties and contemporary folk songs. This work informs his classroom practice and deepens his commitment to music as a shared and culturally grounded experience.
